Before Best Value Weed existed, the legal cannabis market in Ontario had split into two camps. On one end, luxury brands were selling mediocre flower in heavy-handed packaging, charging premium prices for the glossy label more than the plant inside. On the other end, bargain shops were moving anything they could find at the lowest possible cost, with little regard for how it grew, how it tested, or how it smoked. Neither side was being fully honest with the people walking in the door.
We opened on a Tuesday in September, in a small storefront at 133 Dunlop Street East. Our entire pitch was on a hand-lettered sign in the window: Good weed. Fair prices. Ask us anything. Five years later, that sign is still in the window, and the pitch hasn't changed.
What "fair value" actually means here
"Value" is one of the most abused words in retail. Bargain stores use it to mean cheap. Luxury brands use it to mean expensive-but-worth-it. We use it literally: the price you pay should match what you're getting, with no markup for branding theatre, and no shortcuts on the product itself.
That means we buy directly from cultivators whenever possible. We skip the multi-tiered distributor dance that doubles shelf prices. We keep our staff small, our rent honest, and our margins thin. Every dollar we save on overhead gets passed on to what's in the jar.
Who we buy from
We work with a rotating short list of Ontario-based cultivators — most of them small, family-run operations in Niagara, Simcoe County, and just north of us in Muskoka. We visit the farms. We meet the growers. We know which soil they use, whether it's hand-trimmed, and how long each batch cures.
If a supplier can't answer those questions, we don't put their flower on our shelf. That's it. That's the whole filter.
What we don't do
We don't run a delivery service. We don't have an app. We don't do loyalty points that secretly inflate prices to pay for themselves. We're not trying to be the biggest dispensary in Simcoe County. We're trying to be the one Barrie actually trusts — the one where the same budtender is there on a Tuesday night as on a Saturday afternoon, where they remember what you bought last time, and where the person behind the counter can answer any question honestly.
